The Work That Chooses You

Follow the thing you cannot stop returning to.

The advice I was given was to find my passion, as if passion were a lost set of keys. I looked for years and found only anxiety.

The better question, I think, is quieter: what do you keep coming back to, even when it is inconvenient? What subject do you read about for no reason? What kind of problem, when you see it, makes your hands itch to work on it?

Notice what you do on Saturdays when nobody is watching and nobody is paying. That is a clue. Follow it a little further than feels reasonable. The work that is yours does not usually announce itself. It reveals itself, slowly, to people who keep showing up.

"Notice what you do on Saturdays when nobody is watching and nobody is paying. That is a clue."

Written slowly. Read as slowly as you like.
